About Us

The Menai Bridge & District Civic Society was founded in 1973 and is affiliated to the Civic Trust for Wales. It set about taking stock of the town’s environment and considered the threats and opportunities confronting the community.

The main threat is from developers who wish to acquire the most prestigious sites for mainly residential purposes but there are also individuals who exploit planning regulations. In addition, there is the problem of sites owned by the County Council, being kept “green” and free of unnecessary development. Our main aim therefore is to ensure that we preserve green spaces, protect our designated Conservation area and encourage high standards of planning and design.

We monitor new planning applications and keep the residents informed of impending developments. We aim to act as a co-ordinating body and co-operate with the local authority and planning officers and committees to promote sympathetic development and protect features of historic and public interest. We support any local activities arranged by our Council and/or other local groups, are represented on environmental committees and liaise with neighbouring Civic Societies.

We are also concerned to protect both banks of the Menai Straits from exploitation and to ensure that the environment is of paramount importance.
We keep our members informed by producing three newsletters a year. We arrange monthly talks on a variety of relevant subjects from September to May. In the summer months, we arrange visits to places of interest. We were able to steer through the establishment of the Conservation Area. We raised funds to repair the Pier Gatehouse which is in the care of the County Council. We have painted the seating at Porth Wrach and tended the small garden there. We hope to improve the appearance of the Pier Bonc and the promenade. We are collecting the memories of local people of Menai Bridge.
