Stakeholders have met several times. The University's Marketing and Estates departments are putting together materials for a campaign to raise the funds needed to repair the memorial. Bangor Civic Society, although keen to make progress, plans to work with the University campaign.
In addition to the Arch, there will be a longer running campaign to raise funds for the Main Arts Building. Again the University will be arranging publicity in due course. The Prince of Wales agreed to patron this fund during his recent visit to commemorate the laying of the foundation stone. Former high profile alumni have also supported the campaign that aims to raise a substantial sum to undertake the largest body of work ever undertaken on Hare's building, 100 years into its life.
Trees dwarfing the front elevations of the building were removed from the site 18/02/2007 by Micheal Edwards following permission (see below).
Gwynedd Council have also agreed (with conditions) the removal of 4 trees which obscure the elevations to Deiniol Road. Earlier attempts at tree management had failed to be sustainable solution to the problem.
Update A decision of Approved with Conditions was made on 07-Dec- for works on the Arch.
CADW have agreed funding for almost 1/3rd of the projected cost of restoration, estimated at £150,000. A working committee of interested groups will be convened to discuss the raising of the remaining £100,000.
Background Photographs of structural damage and a request for grant aid were submitted to the planning authority following a survey by the University conducted by Atkins Ltd.
The listed building consent application can be seen here.... The application shows photographs of the damage (click the link and then select "media items").
The memorial was declared unsafe in January 2006 but following consultation it was agreed that the arch would be opened for Remembrance Sunday.
College authorities have indicated that the University will not be able to meet the whole cost of works, as limited funding was available for maintenance particularly in areas outside of the spheres of education or research.
See the Listed building entry for more information on the arch, it's architecture and history.
